Cyclone Chido disrupts TB screening services
In December 2024, Tropical Cyclone Chido swept through northern Mozambique, claiming over 100 lives and disrupting the lives of nearly 90,000 children. Among the damaged infrastructure was the Mossuril Health Center in the Ilha de Moçambique District, a vital facility that provides critical tuberculosis (TB) screening services to remote and vulnerable populations.
The storm severely impacted the center’s ultra-portable X-ray system, Delft Light, and the AI-enabled TB-detecting software CAD4TB. These solutions had been instrumental in expanding access to TB screening across rural Mozambique, particularly among underserved communities. The cyclone left the screening equipment completely inoperable.

Rapid response through coordinated partnership
Although the cyclone damage was not covered under the project’s warranty, we acted swiftly to find a solution with the Ministry of Health. Working closely with DNAM and the National Tuberculosis Program (PNCT), the damaged system was sent to the capital, Maputo, for technical evaluation. In its place, a brand new Delft Light was supplied, free of cost, and installed by our local service partner, ensuring that screening services can resume without further delay.

The experience highlights the importance of strong infrastructure for TB screening and the value of responsive partnerships. Elio noted, “Now we have the case of the equipment in Ilha de Moçambique, which wasn’t covered in the contract, but Delft Imaging replaced the device.”
