South Africa’s battles for equity in health, with Delft Imaging

Tuberculosis remains a major public health challenge in South Africa, with high rates of TB, TB-HIV co-infection, and drug-resistant disease continuing to strain the health system. Gaps in diagnosis and linkage to care highlight the urgent need for strengthened screening and diagnostic capacity nationwide.

Our work in South Africa

Since 2014, we have supported TB screening in South Africa through partnerships deploying digital X-ray systems and CAD4TB in high-risk settings and research institutions nationwide.

2014 – 2015

We provided 3 EasyDR digital X-ray systems with CAD4TB to the Aurum Institute, TBHIVCare, and RightToCare to support TB detection in high-risk settings. Deployed across more than 90 correctional facilities, the systems enabled screening of nearly 800,000 inmates, one of the largest active case-finding efforts on the continent, delivered through a pay-per-image model without upfront capital costs.

2018 – 2020

5 Delft OneStopTB X-ray Clinics, mobile clinics equipped with EasyDR systems, were delivered for screening in correctional facilities. An additional EasyDR system was installed as a stationary unit in Pollsmoor Prison, the largest and one of the oldest prisons in the Western Cape Province. Each of these systems supported the daily screening of over 200 people.

2018

We also delivered 4 Delft OneStopTB X-ray Clinics under an EDCTP grant for Zambart, fitted with the EasyDR and CAD4TB. Two of these were deployed in South Africa.

2021

Winny Solutions deployed a CAD4TB in the region, and 3 Delft Ultra systems were provided to the University of Cape Town Lung Institute.

“There have been multiple publications, and it has been established that CAD has very high accuracy, but most of these have been done in passive case-finding, which, in other words, individuals who attend health care facilities, which is a very different population characteristics of a community-based setting, where we believe a large amount of transmission occurs.”
