A study in PLOS Global Public Health evaluated the introduction of 52 digital X-ray systems across Ghana through the ORIO project. The mixed-method evaluation found that the project improved access to X-ray screening and diagnostic services for tuberculosis (TB), lung-related diseases, and other conditions, while district-level TB notifications increased following deployment.
The study also identified key requirements for long-term sustainability, including consistent screening protocols, continued training, sufficient staffing, appropriate system utilization, and reliable internet connectivity for real-time monitoring. The findings underline that expanding access to digital imaging can strengthen diagnostic capacity when technology is integrated into broader health system processes.
In the same year, a study from Bono East, Ghana examined the use of computer-aided detection for TB diagnosis in a setting with limited diagnostic coverage.
The paper concludes that CAD4TB is a promising supplementary tool for TB detection in resource-limited settings. It can support earlier identification of cases that might otherwise be missed where GeneXpert access remains limited.
