Case Study

Nigeria – Integrated TB, vaccination, and primary care services with Wellness-on-Keke

The Wellness-on-Keke (WoK) mobile clinic delivered integrated TB screening, COVID-19 vaccination, and basic health services in hard-to-reach areas. The intervention improved vaccination uptake, enabled efficient TB case finding, and demonstrated the value of integrated point-of-care services in low-resource settings.

Integrated mobile health service

The Wellness-on-Keke is a locally assembled tricycle-based mobile clinic designed to reach hard-to-reach and difficult-terrain areas.

AI-enabled TB screening

The WoK is equipped with an ultra-portable digital X-ray supported by AI and Truenat for TB screening and diagnosis.

Support for COVID-19 vaccination

A solar-powered vaccine carrier and vaccination supplies were included to support COVID-19 immunization outreach.

Multi-disease community outreach

The WoK delivered integrated services, including TB screening, COVID-19 vaccination, blood pressure monitoring, glucose testing, malaria testing, and basic medicines when available.

Result

From October 2022 to January 2023, the WoK was deployed every week to hard-to-reach & difficult terrain areas to provide integrated service, including free blood pressure monitoring, serum glucose check, malaria testing, and dispensing basic medicines when available.

Conclusion
  • The WoK intervention can be a useful tool to provide integrated point-of-care TB services, including COVID-19 vaccination, in a cost-efficient manner, especially in hard-to-reach or rural areas.
  • There are more opportunities to provide expanded medical services, such as surveillance and control of non-communicable diseases like hypertension & diabetes, using the integrated WoK intervention.
