How long-term collaboration with national and clinical partners enabled AI-supported imaging solutions to strengthen TB screening and early maternal risk detection in Malawi.
Malawi’s battles for equity in health,
with Delft Imaging
Malawi continues to face challenges in lung and maternal health, particularly in early detection and access to care in rural areas. Tuberculosis remains a major public health concern, including drug-resistant TB, while limited diagnostic infrastructure continues to affect maternal health outcomes. Strengthening community-level screening and early risk detection remains essential.
31,000 people
developed TB in 2023
3,100 deaths
reported during the same year
3,400 people
affected by both TB and HIV
225 maternal deaths
per 100,000 live births in 2023
Our work in Malawi
We have maintained a longstanding partnership with Malawi since 2016
2016
Most of the population lives in rural areas, where our OneStopTB X-ray Clinics have supported TB screening. We deployed 7 mobile clinics equipped with EasyDR systems across the country’s 7 regions. These clinics remain operational today, supported by annual maintenance services.
2016
We supplied 2 ultra-portable X-ray systems and CAD4TB to the KNCV Malawi. The solutions supported TB active case-finding activities under the Challenge TB project in Malawi.
2017, 2018, 2019
Numerous sites received the CAD4TB, including the Ministry of Health (National Tuberculosis Program), Philips, and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
2022
A Delft Light X-ray system was deployed through the National Tuberculosis Program, along with 10 CAD4TB systems and an additional Delft Light for Malawi’s Centre for Disease Control.
2022
We supplied 15 Delft MAC mobile X-ray units and CAD4TB to the Ministry of Health to further expand screening reach.
2023
Madisi Mission Hospital received another Delft MAC system with CAD4TB to support its TB services.
2023
BabyChecker is currently used at St. Gabriel Mission Hospital and Madisi Mission Hospital. These efforts reflect Malawi’s commitment to improving antenatal care accessibility and risk detection in underserved areas.
2024
We delivered 2 Delft Light systems, each paired with CAD4TB, to Central Medical Stores to strengthen diagnostic capacity at the national level.
