LUS4TB

LUS4TB supports frontline health workers in detecting tuberculosis earlier by guiding them through simple lung scans and analyzing the images directly on a smartphone, even without internet access.

Closing the gap in lung disease diagnostics in
hard-to-reach areas.

Tuberculosis is preventable and curable, yet one in four people with the disease is still undiagnosed. Early detection is essential to stop transmission, but screening methods such as chest X-ray and molecular testing are difficult to scale, and many people with TB do not report symptoms. Accessible and scalable screening solutions are urgently needed, especially in communities and populations where TB is often undetected.

Point-of-care ultrasound
for TB screening

LUS4TB is a point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) that addresses this gap.

Portable, point of care solution

Works with a handheld ultrasound probe and can be used directly at the bedside, making TB screening accessible in low resource and remote settings.

Radiation free and safe

Uses ultrasound instead of X ray, allowing safe and repeatable lung assessments without radiation exposure.

AI powered, offline analysis

The integrated AI model analyzes lung images directly on the device without requiring internet connectivity.

Designed for non experts

Guides users through a standardized lung scanning protocol, enabling healthcare workers without specialized training to perform screenings.

High diagnostic performance

Achieved an AUROC of 0.97 for detecting lung abnormalities, with 90 percent sensitivity at 70 percent specificity for TB detection on unseen test data.

Flexible use across settings

Complements lung disease screening programs in high burden TB regions and primary healthcare settings worldwide.

Extending care beyond TB

The same AI-enabled ultrasound approach can also support pneumonia detection, another significant global health challenge. While lung ultrasound is clinically validated for diagnosing pneumonia, limited expertise restricts its broader implementation. We are currently adapting this technology to address that gap:

  • Building on a standardized lung-scanning protocol
  • Adapting the lung-abnormality AI model for pneumonia detection
  • Supporting frontline health workers in earlier identification
  • Expanding access in resource-constrained settings
